Bronze Ram Skull Sconce

A large cast bronze wall sconce in the form of a rams’ skull with a combination of bone-white painted, dark patinated, and bright bronze finishes. There are two lights at the ends of the horns as well as a single small lamp illuminating the skull from within. I bought this from a dealer in Nevada, where the iconic image of a bleached skull in the desert resonates clearly. While Nevada in the early 20th C. doesn't immediately come to mind as a center of sophisticated design and excellent metalwork craft quality, perhaps this fixture traces back to the homes and institutions built by the great wealth generated by the territory's silver and gold mining.
