The backplate is an openwork composition of strapwork, scrolls, and foliate motifs that support dragon heads, a knight in profile, and a central grotesque from whose mouth issues the arms. The arms take the form of fluted columns having foliate capitals. Above them the gadrooned waxpans hold studded candlecups. Maker unknown.
